The Problem
Supervisors needed more understanding and direction when faced with employees with disabilities. Some felt unprepared handling workplace accommodation requests.
The Solution
A scenario-based eLearning simulation allows learners to make key decisions in how to respond to the many types of accommodation requests while following the Americans with Disabilities guidelines.
Responsibilities: Analysis, Instructional Design, Content Writing, eLearning Development, Evaluation
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360
The Process
I worked with the SME (a Human Resources staff member) before embarking on storyboarding and outlining the learning outcomes. We considered how supervisors should properly respond to workplace accommodation requests as well as existing laws/regulations within the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act).
I did additional research to build out the content and created meaningful objectives based on the department needs. Additionally I structured the content to ensure that it was logical, organized, and easy to understand.
Making the Content More Engaging
Once the content was complete, I began making the course more interactive and engaging.
I built the content directly in Articulate Storyline and added several scenarios using mentor characters to highlight three examples of workplace accommodation requests.
I also added a tab interaction and multiple choice quizzes for each accommodation scenario.
Additionally, I met with the SME and several supervisors for review, refinement, and feedback.
Building the Branching Scenario
I met with the SME before designing the scenarios. During the meeting, the SME discussed scenarios where a supervisor would be faced with a workplace accommodation request from someone on their team.
Then I asked what the appropriate step-by-step response would be. After identifying the ideal response, we discussed several wrong choices that a supervisor would make and why they would legally go against ADA guidelines. We went on to determine best choices, okay choices, and bad choices that would violate workplace laws.
I used my notes from the meeting to effectively build the branching scenario in Storyline.
Training Results
This "choose the appropriate response" approach was well-received by learners. The course received positive feedback from supervisors.
Building this course taught me that this eLearning approach is an excellent tool for engaging users and improving real-world performance on the job.
